China’s visa-free policy: Nine more countries added to the list

China has announced plans to expand its visa-free policy that will allow visitors from 38 countries to stay for up to 30 days without requiring a visa from November 30, 2024. The new policy, which will be in effect until December 31, 2025. As per reports, it’s an experiment which is designed to encourage tourism and international exchanges in the country. This significant change will double the previous visa-free stay limit of 15 days.

Extended visa-free stay
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the extension of the visa-free stay for those from eligible countries, increasing the stay limit from 15 to 30 days. This extension is expected to attract more travellers, enhancing China’s global appeal as a destination for both leisure and professional visits.
The expanded stay period aims to make it easier for tourists and professionals to visit China without the hassle of a visa application. This change builds on China’s ongoing efforts to stimulate tourism and facilitate international interactions.
Along with the extended stay period, China is expanding the number of countries eligible for visa-free entry. This expansion opens up opportunities for more international visitors and strengthens ties between China and these newly added countries.
Another experiment
In another development, China is introducing a new purpose for staying under the visa-free policy. Starting from November 30, 2024, “Type F” exchange visits will be eligible for visa-free entry. These visits, intended for educational and cultural exchanges, reflect China’s focus on fostering international cooperation and understanding.
Growing number of countries

The visa-free program, which began in December 2023, initially covered six European countries—France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia. Over the past year, China has gradually expanded this list, aiming to attract a wider range of international visitors.
As of the third quarter of 2024, China recorded 8.19 million foreign visitors, marking a 48.8% increase from the previous year. Of these, 4.89 million travelers used the visa-free entry, a 78.6% year-on-year surge.
China is all set to welcome even more international visitors, further boosting its tourism sector.
