Etihad Airways to Expand Flight Services to South Africa in 2025

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, the second flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has announced plans to expand its services to South Africa starting in 2025. The airline will increase its flight frequency between Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg during the Northern Hemisphere summer season, strengthening connectivity between the two hubs.

Effective 30 March 2025, Etihad Airways will operate four weekly return flights between Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg, with services scheduled on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. By 04 August 2025, the airline will further enhance its operations on this route by introducing daily flights, offering travelers increased flexibility and convenience.

The expanded schedule is as follows:

  • Flight EY747: Departs Abu Dhabi at 02:20 and arrives in Johannesburg at 08:35.
  • Flight EY748: Departs Johannesburg at 09:55 and arrives in Abu Dhabi at 19:50.

This development reflects Etihad Airways’ commitment to meeting the growing demand for travel between the UAE and South Africa, as well as its broader strategy to enhance connectivity with key global markets. The route expansion provides an excellent opportunity for African travel agents to tap into the increasing flow of travelers seeking both leisure and business opportunities in these two dynamic destinations.

Etihad Airways’ decision to strengthen its presence in South Africa aligns with the rising interest in tourism and trade between the Middle East and Africa. Johannesburg, as a major gateway to Southern Africa, is a key destination for both UAE nationals and international travelers connecting through Abu Dhabi. The daily flights will also cater to the growing South African diaspora in the UAE and the increasing number of South Africans exploring Abu Dhabi’s cultural and commercial attractions.

Moreover, this route expansion offers seamless connections for African travelers to explore Etihad Airways’ extensive global network, which spans Europe, Asia, and North America. With shorter layovers and efficient scheduling through Abu Dhabi, South African travelers will have greater access to new international markets, while UAE-based travelers will enjoy easier access to Johannesburg and beyond, including popular safari and cultural destinations in South Africa.

The timing of this announcement is strategic, as air travel demand continues to recover and grow post-pandemic. Notably, South Africa has seen a resurgence in inbound tourism, with the country’s natural beauty, wildlife experiences, and vibrant cities drawing visitors from across the globe. Similarly, Abu Dhabi is gaining popularity as a destination for luxury tourism, world-class shopping, and cultural experiences.

For African travel agents, Etihad Airways’ expanded flight services present a valuable opportunity to offer clients enhanced travel options between the Middle East and Southern Africa. The increased frequency and daily flights from August 2025 create more convenience for travelers, whether they are seeking leisure, business, or connecting flights to other destinations. The airline’s reputation for premium service and seamless connections ensures a superior travel experience for passengers.

Etihad Airways’ expansion not only enhances connectivity but also highlights the deepening relationship between the UAE and South Africa. With this move, the airline is poised to play a significant role in fostering tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between the two regions. As the 2025 launch approaches, African travel professionals should prepare to leverage the new offerings to connect travelers with exciting opportunities on both sides of the route.
