India’s medical travel accounts for 29.6% of overnight trips, with spending at ₹32,167 per trip
India’s domestic medical travel is emerging as a tourism segment, with 29.6% of overnight trips linked to health and medical purposes, according to MoSPI’s 2025-26 survey. Average spending reached ₹32,167 per medical trip, including ₹23,361 on medical items, while rural and urban averages stood at ₹29,454 and ₹41,649 respectively. Medical trips accounted for 38.4% of rural overnight travel versus 16.5% in urban India, with hired vehicles the leading mode. Separately, the government reported 507,244 foreign nationals arriving for medical treatment in 2025, about 5.5% of FTAs; Bangladesh accounted for 325,127 arrivals. In September, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal called for wider hospital participation in Heal in India, verified providers, trained caregivers and seamless international patient journeys, strengthening the B2B medical-travel ecosystem.
