U.S. announces details for 2024 Diversity Visa program

The U.S. Department of State has unveiled details for the upcoming Diversity Visa (DV) Program, which is set to open in October 2024. This program is designed to grant visas to individuals from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States, based on strict eligibility criteria.

The registration period for the DV-2026 program will commence in October 2024. Applicants interested in participating must submit their entries electronically within the designated registration period, as late or paper submissions will not be accepted under any circumstances. There is no cost associated with entering the program. The Department of State recommends that applicants complete their entries on their own and carefully retain all confirmation details for their records. It is advised against using visa consultants or agents to assist with the process. Instead, applicants should personally oversee the completion of their entries to ensure accuracy and compliance with all program requirements.

For individuals who applied for the DV-2024 program, the deadline to check the status of their application is September 30, 2024. The registration period for the DV-2024 program was from October 5, 2022, to November 8, 2022. Those who participated in the DV-2025 program are advised to retain their confirmation numbers until at least September 30, 2025, to facilitate any necessary follow-up or inquiries regarding their application status.

The Department of State has also announced that it will not process Diversity Visa cases that were impacted by lower court decisions from the DV-2020 and DV-2021 program years. As a result, individuals whose cases were affected by these decisions will need to submit new applications if they wish to participate. Eligible individuals can apply afresh for the DV-2026 program, which opens in October 2024. This new submission will allow them to re-enter the selection process and potentially secure a visa under the current program rules.

The selection process for the Diversity Visa Program is conducted through a randomised system. Entrants have the opportunity to check their selection status on the Electronic Diversity Visa (E-DV) website, which was last updated on May 4, 2024. It is important to note that while being selected through this random process is a significant step, it does not automatically guarantee the issuance of a visa. All individuals selected must still meet the comprehensive U.S. legal requirements for eligibility, which includes providing necessary documentation and satisfying all conditions outlined by immigration authorities.
