Nigeria and Russia set April 2027 target to sign new air services agreement
Nigeria and Russia have agreed to renegotiate their 59-year-old Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA), aiming to sign a new deal in April 2027. The decision was reached during a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Russia’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Dmitry Stanislavovich Zverev, on the sidelines of the Third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow.
The current BASA, in place since 1967, will be replaced with a modern framework that reflects recent developments in international aviation and opens new opportunities for cooperation. Both countries have set a six-month timeline to conclude negotiations, with the signing planned for Saint Petersburg in April 2027. The new agreement is expected to improve air connectivity, encourage institutional collaboration, and support mutually beneficial engagement between the two aviation sectors.
Nigeria’s delegation included the Director General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, the Registrar of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Dr. Danjuma Adamu Ismaila, and directors from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and the NCAA. The meeting also explored further areas of potential cooperation in aviation and related sectors.
